Purse Glosses. These are the lip products that will go with any look and you can apply easily without a mirror. I am guilty of keeping up to 10 lip products in my purse at a time so I can easily change my look at the drop of a hat, but the ones I tend to reach for most are the low maintenance, neutral, hydrating options. I’ve selected 3 of my tried and true favorites that look great even if your lips are dry or the rest of your makeup has gone wonky.
Questionably the most exciting day of my year so far was when I discovered my local Bloomingdales opened a Space NK counter.
It’s still a 30 minute drive away for me, but so worth it and much closer than the UK. I couldn’t contain my excitement at By Terry being readily available that I bought another Ombre Blackstar in Bronze Moon. I am in love with these eye shadow sticks. Blond Opal will be my next purchase. I am already planning my next trip back to Space NK and scheming about what I will buy.
My luck continued when Sephora had the YSL Rouge Volupte 1 Nude Beige in stock. I had to pick it up while I had the chance. YSL lipsticks are the most beautifully packaged makeup items in the world. We can all agree on that.
The formula of the Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lipsticks is wonderful. It is moisturizing and the color is very pigmented and does not cling to dry patches or look scary as it wears off. But, this lipstick is supposed to have a matte finish—I would say it is a satin or semi-matte finish at best. It does not really apply or dry completely matte and since it is very creamy it is hard to expect it to dry to a matte finish.
That being said, I really like the look it gives and this color is another beautiful brown-y, pink nude for the fall. Just don’t buy this expecting it to give a super matte effect.
Unexpectedly, Fig Jam has become a fall lipstick staple for me.
I typically love the red and berry hues that are ever popular in autumn, but for the office or school bright statement lips can be a little too much. Arguably red is classic and always appropriate, but if you’re scared to make such a bold statement in a conservative environment, Fig Jam may be your answer.
We all know my love for the Revlon Lip Butters and once again the formula and wearability of Fig Jam has me hooked. The lip butters deliver a sheer, but not too sheer, wash of color to the lips while keeping them hydrated. This is definitely one of the darker shades in the range, but you can still apply it confidently without a mirror and blend it in with your finger to sheer it out further if you prefer.
As an alternative to red and berry, Fig Jam is a brown shade with red undertones that make it very wearable. While it looks to be a super dark brown in the tube, it is in fact more of a red. Brown-y lipsticks are very trendy right now and while a full 90s brown lip may be a little much and definitely doesn’t flatter everyone, this Lip Butter can help you embrace the trend. It is neutral and in vogue for fall making it an effortless addition to your makeup bag.
This lipstick is scary. Just look at the dark purple packaging and deep purple bullet. I thought there would be no way that this lipstick was wearable for day or night. “Maybe just for Halloween,” I thought.
This lipstick is pink. Not purple.
I was so pleasantly surprised when I got this lipstick home and swatched it. Hunk is a bright, statement pink. Such a shade is not wearable for the daytime or the office, but for a fun night out this is just the ticket.
The formula of these lipsticks is very impressive. Since they are “Butter Lipsticks” they are very creamy and slightly shiny, but they also are very moisturizing on the lips and wear very well. When applying even this bright color I felt like I was slathering on a moisturizing balm. After just one swipe Hunk had covered my lips in the bright pink color. I was able to build it up even more dramatically with another layer, but overall the color pay-off was great.
My favorite part of this lipstick has to be the packaging. If you haven’t experienced the magnetic closure of these new Nars lipsticks, then you have to find your nearest Sephora or Nordstroms and try it out.
The magnetic snap when it closes is so satisfying.
My second favorite thing has to be the color. Nars Anna is a deep pink. It has mauvy, cool undertones, which I love and help your teeth look whiter.
I will definitely be wearing this color a lot in the fall and probably all year because it is a deep color, but isn’t too shocking or bold for everyday. That means it is office and school appropriate, but you’ll still make a makeup statement.
The entire Nars Audacious lipstick line is inspired by and named after Hollywood starlets. All of the colors are bold, luxurious and make a statement. The formula is also very creamy and feels very hydrating. It did seem to bleed slightly and look a tad messy after while so I would recommend using a lip liner, but I am still satisfied with this lipstick purchase.
